The Geometric Structure of Complex Fluids

    Get PDF
This paper develops the theory of affine Euler-Poincar\'e and affine Lie-Poisson reductions and applies these processes to various examples of complex fluids, including Yang-Mills and Hall magnetohydrodynamics for fluids and superfluids, spin glasses, microfluids, and liquid crystals. As a consequence of the Lagrangian approach, the variational formulation of the equations is determined. On the Hamiltonian side, the associated Poisson brackets are obtained by reduction of a canonical cotangent bundle. A Kelvin-Noether circulation theorem is presented and is applied to these examples

Equivalent theories of liquid crystal dynamics

There are two competing descriptions of nematic liquid crystal dynamics: the Ericksen-Leslie director theory and the Eringen micropolar approach. Up to this day, these two descriptions have remained distinct in spite of several attempts to show that the micropolar theory comprises the director theory. In this paper we show that this is the case by using symmetry reduction techniques and introducing a new system that is equivalent to the Ericksen-Leslie equations and includes disclination dynamics. The resulting equations of motion are verified to be completely equivalent, although one of the two different reductions offers the possibility of accounting for orientational defects. After applying these two approaches to the ordered micropolar theory of Lhuiller and Rey, all the results are eventually extended to flowing complex fluids, such as nematic liquid crystals.Comment: 37 pages. We consider a general approach for the process of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian reduction by symmetries in chiral gauge models. This approach is used to show the complete integrability of several one dimensional texture equations arising in liquid Helium phases and neutron stars

The present paper derives systems of partial differential equations that admit a quadratic zero curvature representation for an arbitrary real semisimple Lie algebra. It also determines the general form of Hamilton's principles and Hamiltonians for these systems and analyzes the linear stability of their equilibrium solutions in the examples of so(3)\mathfrak{so}(3) and sl(2,R)\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R}).Comment: 17 pages, no figures.
